What's happening in Music!

We have so much to look forward to as the excitement in Music continues into the spring:

Have you heard any of the songs we are working on in our grade seven and eight band and orchestra classes? Maybe you have a son/daughter in the orchestra that will show you a bit of their orchestra part in Soon Hee Newbold's 'Viking'. Or perhaps there is a band student in your household that will share their part in the mysterious and haunting 'Anasazi' by John Edmundson.

In our younger grades, we continue to explore the different instrument families in the symphony orchestra. These days, the Music room can often be filled with the sound of instruments as we focus on storytelling in music, taking on the task of adding sound effects to some of our favourites or creating patterns that may set the mood or tell their own stories.

Our Grade 6 Music Program of Choice students have been trying out many of the string instruments that are available to learn in our school's orchestra program. We have started by learning about the instruments, caring for them, and have been working towards playing together pizzicato, which means with plucked strings. We have started to learn about the bow and how to make clear, resonating sound on open strings.

This is truly a time of growth, discovery, and excitement in our Music program, and we are thrilled about the progress our students are making!
